Past distillation control were based on heuristics. My research interest is in developing the systematic control theory for distillation systems. It has been shown that the column control configuration that stabilizes the mass balance will yield stable control. This project also involves developing distillation simulation models to replicate instabilities that have been observed in distillation control. The source of the instability will be identified using theory and new control systems will be developed to stabilize the column.
